How does AI teacher observation feedback work in Observation Assistant?
You record or upload the lesson audio, or type notes live, and Observation Assistant turns it into a speaker-labeled transcript. From that, we build a short summary report and a detailed coaching report, and every point is tied to a quote and a timestamp from the lesson. If you add lesson materials and the teacher's grade, subject, and experience, the feedback reflects that context.
Is Observation Assistant a teacher evaluation tool?
No. Observation Assistant is built for coaching and growth, not judgment. Our reports open with strengths, use coaching language, and give no scores or ratings. As we like to say, observation should be "not a judgment, not a gotcha," but a shared process of respect and growth.
How fast do I get an observation report?
Most reports are ready within a couple of minutes of the lesson ending. Observation Assistant handles the counting and note-sorting that usually takes hours, so you can spend that time on the conversation with your teacher.
Can I type notes instead of recording the lesson?
Yes. In Observation Assistant you can record or upload lesson audio, type notes live, or do both together. Pick whatever fits the classroom and your own style of observing.
What if my district doesn't allow audio recording?
You can still use Observation Assistant. On the web, choose a text-only observation and enter your typed notes and any lesson artifacts, like the lesson plan, student work, or materials. Observation Assistant analyzes what you enter and builds the same kind of evidence-based coaching report, with no audio recorded at all.
Does Observation Assistant work on iPhone, Android, and the web?
Observation Assistant runs on iPhone and in any web browser at app.observationassistant.com, and one account keeps everything in sync. We don't have an Android app. On an Android device, open the web app in Chrome.
What happens to the classroom audio and student information?
Audio is deleted automatically once the transcript is created, and personal information like student names is redacted during transcription. Your data is never used to train AI models. Reports stay in your account until you delete them, and you can export or delete your account at any time.
Can I organize observations by teacher?
Yes. With an Observer plan ($9.99 a month for 8 observations, $59.99 a year for 50, or Unlimited at $99.99 a year), Observation Assistant gives you a folder and a dashboard for each teacher, queues for incomplete and finalized reports, and a finalize step, so you can follow each teacher's strengths and goals over time.
How long can a recorded observation be, and how are observations counted?
Recordings under 3 minutes aren't accepted. A recording of 3 to 10 minutes counts as half an observation, and anything up to 1 hour 10 minutes counts as one. Longer recordings count as two, and recording stops automatically at 1 hour 40 minutes. You're charged only when a transcript is completed, so failed jobs are free.
How much does Observation Assistant cost?
The Individual plan is $6.99 a month for 4 observations, which roll over, or $39.99 a year for 48. The Observer plan is $9.99 a month for 8 observations or $59.99 a year for 50, and Observer Unlimited is $99.99 a year. If you need more, an extra 25-observation pack is $39.99.
What's the difference between the Individual and Observer plans?
The Individual plan is for one person getting feedback on their own teaching, at $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year. The Observer plan is for anyone who supports several teachers. It adds the Observation Assistant dashboard, with a folder for each teacher and a way to track themes, strengths, feedback, and goals across all of them. Observer is $9.99 a month for 8 observations, $59.99 a year for 50, or Unlimited at $99.99 a year.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every new Observation Assistant account comes with 3 free observations, and no payment details are needed for the free trial. Your 14-day trial window starts with your first observation, not on the day you sign up. Start at app.observationassistant.com.
Can student teacher supervisors use Observation Assistant?
Yes. Supervisors can use Observation Assistant to record or take notes during visits and keep each student teacher in a separate folder on the Observer dashboard. Because reports are evidence-based and non-evaluative, they give new teachers clear, specific feedback that's a starting point for a coaching conversation.
Who built Observation Assistant?
Observation Assistant was built by Dr. Joseph Owens, a practicing school administrator with a background in K-12 arts teaching. It grew out of the questions he explores on The Observation Deck: how to "automate the mundane to focus on the magnificent," so observers can spend their time on people.
